Volunteer

When you volunteer at the Dayton Society of Natural History, you join a team of volunteers across multiple ages, interests, and areas of expertise, from former teachers and retired engineers, to teens and college students looking to expand their horizons through volunteerism. The Dayton Society of Natural History has an opportunity for everyone to contribute to meaningful projects and get hands-on while interacting with the community---all while having fun and meeting new people.

Volunteer Opportunities at the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery

The mission of the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery is to be the premier regional provider of interactive science learning experiences which enrich the lives of children and adults, enhance the quality of life in our community, and promote a broad understanding of the world.

Our volunteers are committed to excellence!  Volunteer applicants must submit an application, participate in screenings and attend an orientation prior to placement.

Teen Volunteers

Our youth volunteer program combines service to the community with learning and leadership opportunities for high school students ages 14 – 18.  Some opportunities are available only to youth age 16 and older.

Our program mirrors the academic calendar to provide seasonal opportunities for students who are involved in other extra-curricular activities. Intake for the Fall Semester takes place in August.  Intake for the Spring Semester takes place in December and early January.  Intake for summer positions takes place in May.

Externships & Internships

Externships are intensive, unpaid work experiences of a fixed duration.  Students and recent graduates develop essential skills by volunteering in one of the Museum’s fascinating departments.  Choose from Biology, Customer Service, Education, History or Physical Science.  Extern applicants must submit a proposal to This email address is being protected from spambots. Internships are work experiences for students that fulfill academic requirements.  Most internships are unpaid; some offer modest stipends.  We have hosted interns in Anthropology, Astronomy, Biology, Education, History, Nonprofit Development and Physical Science.

Animal Care Externships

The Boonshoft Museum of Discovery is seeking applicants for the Animal Care Externship. Externs work with animal care staff for 10 to 12 weeks and gain experience in the areas of animal care, record keeping, animal enrichment and interpretation of animal exhibits. Live Animal Externship, Fall 2014

The Boonshoft Museum of Discovery is seeking applicants for the fall session of the Animal Care Externship. Externs work with animal care staff for 10 to 12 weeks and gain experience in the areas of animal care, record keeping, animal enrichment and interpretation of animal exhibits. Dayton Regional STEM School Internships

Local students participate in an immersive three-week work experience supporting our summer camps as counselors (six positions) or administrative aides (two positions).  Interested students must submit a letter of interest by May 15 to This email address is being protected from spambots. Education Department

Each summer, the Education Department offers both full and part time seasonal program instructor positions.  During this 8 – 10 week experience, you can expect to strengthen your skills in communication, leadership, free choice education techniques and STEM applications.

Entry level candidates must be 16 years of age or older and meet one or more of the following criteria:
•    have completed/are currently enrolled in an early childhood education program
•    completed Leaders In Training* program plus 100 volunteer hours at the Boonshoft  Museum
•    be able to document at least  6 months combined experience working with children, customer service, STEM related club and/or theater

Qualified full time candidates must be 18 years of age or older and be enrolled in/have completed college level programs in education and/or a STEM field. These candidates, if selected, will receive additional training and experience in pedagogy, classroom management and lesson planning.  Successful candidates will be energetic, flexible and enthusiastic about teaching.  All candidates must be able to pass a background check for child safety.

*Leaders in Training is a two-week job training program that includes classroom instruction, hands-on learning and volunteer experience.

Anthropology Internship

College students from across the United States, and even from foreign countries, compete each summer for inclusion in a master’s level, eight-week summer internship hosted by the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery and SunWatch Indian Village/Archaeological Park. A handful of budding archaeologists are selected by the Boonshoft Museum to spend six weeks excavating a North Dayton Fort Ancient period site contemporaneous with SunWatch and two weeks working on the reconstruction of the 800-year-old Village.
