General Information

Along the banks of the Great Miami River, an extraordinary place hides within a seemingly ordinary setting...SunWatch, the original site of an 800-year-old Native American village. Walk in the footsteps of the Fort Ancient people who built SunWatch and catch a glimpse of their everyday lives as you explore reconstructed houses and structures in their village. Deepen your understanding of Native American cultures with special traveling exhibits, lectures and a tour of the indoor Interpretive Center. Expand your understanding of the Fort Ancient people and experience the heritage of Native Americans with a journey back in time at SunWatch Indian Village/Archaeological Park.

SunWatch hosts a variety of events throughout the year for learners of all ages, including several Scout Days, Family Day, and even a Community Open House.  In addition, there are many eagerly-anticipated events that take place throughout the year, including:

  • An informative monthly Lecture Series (January-May).
  • A traditional American Indian gathering celebrating community with traditional music, storytelling, food and dancing at the Keeping the Tradition Pow Wow (June).
  • The SunWatch Associates Board fundraiser that welcomes summer with a silent auction, raffle, and heavy hors d’oeuvres overlooking the reconstructed village at In Celebration of Solstice (June).
  • A Native Flute Gathering (August) weekend featuring performances by Native flutists, traditional storytelling, and music workshops.
  • Witness historical reenactments of first contact between American Indians and colonial traders at the Cultures in Contact: Reenactment Weekend (October).

Ohio Archaeological Council Fall Membership Meeting Experts from around Ohio, including specialists from the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery, will present the latest news and research findings in the field of archaeology.
